The famous afro-funk ensemble is back on the scene, presenting its new sextet line-up with the album ‘The Monkey Tapes’, which, not surprisingly, comes out on 7 October. The band is known on the Italian and international scene for the prestige of the many musicians involved and for the importance of the artistic collaborations it has undertaken – such as those with Lester Bowie, Tony Allen and Jessica Lourie. Its sound is characterised by a fusion of ethnic percussion and electronic music, in an unstable balance between vintage and modern.

Mamud Band, an afrofunk ensemble with over twenty-five years of activity, now returns to the stage presenting its new sextet line-up with the new album ‘The Monkey Tapes’, due out on 7 October (in collaboration with JAZZMI).

The band is known on the Italian and international scene for the prestige of the numerous musicians involved – more than forty so far, including Gianluca Petrella and Guglielmo Pagnozzi – and for the importance of the artistic collaborations it has undertaken – such as those with trumpeter Lester Bowie or drummer Tony Allen – as well as for the creativity of its original compositions, made even more unique by the band’s iconic sound, characterised by the fusion of ethnic percussion and electronic music, in an unstable balance between a passion for vintage sound and openness to modernity.

Two hit singles have already been released in 2022: the first is ‘Clav Funk’, a tribute to the sound of the Clavinet, the iconic instrument of 1970s funk music. The second single, ‘Equalisation’, travels on psychedelic sounds with an Eighties aftertaste, taking inspiration from the pioneering Ozric Tentacles and winking at milestones such as Miles Davis’ and Manu Dibango’s Eighties records. Once again, the band’s sound is characterised by the skilful fusion of electronic music and acoustic percussion, here rendered as if they were patterns on a drum machine.
