Gershwin defined &#8220;Porgy and Bess&#8221; as a folk opera, a true American story, a popular tale of Black folk drawing on Black music, the language of jazz, ragtime, blues, and gospel. Love and passion, but also the city&#8217;s vices, drugs and alcohol, religion and superstition, crimes and betrayals.
