Multi-instrumentalist and one of the most compelling drummers on the contemporary scene, Nate Smith moves effortlessly between jazz, R&B, and hip hop, developing a personal and instantly recognizable musical language. Born in Virginia, he trained at a very young age in Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program and performed at New York’s Blue Note at just twenty years old. In the early 2000s, he made his debut as a producer on Michael Jackson’s “Heaven Can Wait,” soon joined Dave Holland’s band, and began collaborating with Chris Potter, building an extensive network of relationships with artists such as Brittany Howard, Pat Metheny, and Norah Jones. His style, marked by a strong sense of groove, improvisation, and contemporary exploration, has become his signature: a balance between technical precision and creative freedom that defines the identity of his musical work.
