She has been called an runaway of jazz, for the free and expressive way in which she speaks its musical language, yet in her voice we can detect ripples of Billie Holiday. After all, why should she run away from something that,in her own words, gave her a reason to live? Melanie De Biasio is a singer, flutist, composer and above all an indestructibly delicate artist. As elegiac as Jeff Buckley and as melancholyc as Portisheads, she amazes and enchants audiences with her dizzying attention to detail. From Monk she learned the importance of silence and of unplayed notes, to which she added her own power of subtraction. Her most recent work Lilies features songs made of nothing more than two chords and whisper, yet capable of building an world from which it’s impossible to run away.
