Emotional catharsis and a good dose of empathy are the ingredients of Immanuel Wilkins’ musical recipe, described by Pitchfork as ‘an ocean-deep jazz epic’. Sombre melodies and melodic strings intertwine in wide-ranging moments for an engaging live performance similar to John Coltrane’s legacy.

Saxophonist and composer, Immanuel Wilkins was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Philadelphia. Audiences discovered this compelling sound with his acclaimed debut album Omega, named the best debut jazz album of 2020 by the New York Times.

With ‘The 7th Hand’, his latest studio work, he explores the relationship between presence and nothingness in an hour-long suite of seven movements.

Through this album, Wilkins posed a question steeped in biblical symbolism: if the number 6 represents the limit of human possibilities, if divine intervention were invoked, allowing the seventh element to possess his quartet, what would his music sound like?

Line up
Immanuel Wilkins, Alto sax
Micah Thomas, piano
Rick Rosato, bass
Kweku Sumbry, drums
