Every morning, as children, they began by emptying their breath and producing a unified meditative tone. Their music is very much like a transcendental practice. The cathartic energy of their live shows draws its raw power from this deep reserve, from an authenticity that cannot be faked.
In the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, the music runs deep. Growing up on Chicago’s South Side, the group consists of seven brothers, sons of jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran, who played with the deeply spiritual jazz group Sun Ra Akestra. Their father taught them to play the trumpet from an early age, instilling in them a deep sense of the spiritual roots of music.
Since the release of their debut album ‘Flipside’ in 2004, they have become the world’s leading brass ensemble and have participated in tours and recordings with Prince, Gorillaz, Macy Gray, De La Soul, Erykah Badu and Mos Def, among others. The calibre of their collaborators reflects not only the esteem in which they are held, but also the scope of their vision.
