“I don’t want to name my music. Other people can give a name to what I do. It is just the combination of what I have listened to and what I have learned. It has some elements of classical music, it has some rock, it has some jazz, but I don’t need to give it a name,” with these words Hiromi defines her music.
Japan has produced an impressive number of jazz pianists, from Toshiko Akiyoshi and Makoto Ozone. And now, in the midst of the changing 21st century, pianist Hiromi is the latest in that line of extraordinary musicians. Born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan, she began her first piano lessons at the age of six. Since the 2003 release of her debut album “Another Mind,” Hiromi has electrified audiences and critics east and west with a creative energy that encompasses and eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical and pop parameters, taking improvisation and composition to new levels of complexity and sophistication. In her career, Hiromi has achieved several awards including a Grammy, the result of her signature ongoing exploration and use of a completely unique and disorienting sound palette.
