In the words of Mark Stryker (Detroit Free Press) ‘Freedom, discipline, daring, passion, swing, broken rhythms, orchestral textures, interactive sparring, mind-blowing dynamics, astonishing creativity and authority…you want to know what jazz really is? Listen to Billy Hart’

The Washington D.C. drummer, born in 1940, has, since the early 1960s, after a debut spent playing R&B with Otis Redding and Sam & Dave, met, live or in the studio, practically all or most of the jazz masters. To name a few: Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith, McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, John Scofield, Bobby Hutcherson, Kenny Barron, Paul Bley, Dave Douglas, Chico Freeman, Shirley Horn, Lee Konitz, Charles Lloyd, Joe Lovano, Mingus Dynasty, Chick Corea and countless others. When it came to finding a drummer, Billy Hart was, and is, always everyone’s first choice. In addition to his performing activities, Hart is very active in teaching, between universities and music conservatories. For some time now, he has been leading an excellent quartet, whose excellent recording debut dates back to 2006.
