Amaro Freitas is the new face of Brazilian jazz and one of the most original voices on the international scene. Born in Recife, in the north-east of Brazil, his pianism is a kaleidoscope of sound that weaves the traditional rhythms of frevo and baião with the influences of giants such as Coltrane, Monk and Chick Corea.
After the global success of the Sankofa album, Freitas returns with Y’Y (Psychic Hotline Records), a spiritual and sonic homage to the Amazon and the indigenous Sateré Mawé culture. Co-produced with Laercio Costa and Vinicius Aquino, and featuring guests such as Shabaka Hutchings and Brandee Younger, Y’Y redefines the boundaries of contemporary jazz in a decolonial, ecological and profoundly human key.
