Feeling is more important than perfectionism is the belief that guides the restless creativity of multi-instrumentalist, rapper and producer Alfa Mist. ” There’s no access to jazz where I’m from. There’s no way I would have come to it without finding those hip-hop records and wanting to understand them.” says Alfa and his role models include the genre’s great producers Hi-tek, Madlib and J Dillai.
Alfa Mist is a self-taught artist who taught himself to understand the piano, did so by ear, dissecting the harmonic intricacies of those formative records, gradually fusing his own rhythmic style with the immediacy of jazz improvisation, all tied together with a pervasive sense of melody. So along with musicians Kaya Thomas-Dyke, Emmavie and Dornik Leigh, whom Alfa met at university, he built his own network of collaborators around the London jazz scene of the mid-2010s. “I’m trying to get where I’m aiming, but I don’t want to get burnt out,” says Alfa, who is pulling off a new and interesting style of jazz and hip hop making, a kinetic, never predictable, confident sound.
