A caravan heading East, passing by Greek dances that smell strongly of Turkey …Klezmer of Balkan Jews….accelerated Roma versions of Balkan Klezmer….Syrian Taksim… and then Kurdish ballads, where echoes of the Caucasus and Iran already resound.
Ashti Abdo, Manuel Buda and Fabio Marconi began working together in January 2016. The repertoire – popular and otherwise – of vast areas ranging from Italy to the Middle East, passing through the Balkans, Greece, Eastern Europe, and on to the Caucasus, was and is the trio’s only musical ‘origin’, with a great wealth of melodies, musical forms, rhythms, that resemble and speak to each other, making us and all these lands much closer than it sometimes seems.
But Abdo Buda Marconi trio is also a human encounter, of stories and people: with Ashti Abdo from Syrian Kurdistan, and witness to a history and culture that still struggles to exist today. With Manuel Buda, a Milanese Jew of mixed origins, linked to the Sefardites from Livorno, Rome and Calabria. And with Fabio Marconi, a Milanese, ravenous researcher and interpreter of popular music from Italy and the world.
