A fixed gaze toward tradition and the past while constantly staying in step with the rhythms of the younger generation-this is the essence of Lakecia Benjamin. With her new album Phoenix, she resurrects jazz by giving it a new form, as infectious as R&B and as vibrant as funk.

“Phoenix” is a dual metaphor, on the one hand a reference to the New York City in which the artist grew up, a city she saw slowly fade away during the pandemic and then come back to life. On the other, a personal reference to the death from which she miraculously escaped in the fall of 2021, following a serious car accident. This new work is also an opportunity to highlight her compositions, but also the creativity, talent and commitment of the female artists she surrounds herself with. It is a direct testimony to the musical evolution this saxophonist and composer has had over the years, a stratospheric rise of an artist who firmly knows what she wants to say and the exact way in which to communicate it, while honoring her mentors and the traditions that preceded her.
