There are art forms capable of expanding our perception, shifting the boundaries of how we read the world. Photography and jazz, historically intertwined in a fascinating synergy, embody the perfect synthesis of this: two languages born to chase one another, where the image gives shape to sound and music gives rhythm to vision. At Volvo Studio Milano, this continuous dialogue becomes an exhibition celebrating the power of those game changers—gazes, sounds, intuitions—that broke the rules and told the stories of entire generations. Scheduled from October 23 to November 7 as part of JAZZMI, the exhibition dedicated to Herman Leonard and Pino Ninfa brings together the works of two masters who left an indelible mark on the musical culture of the genre. The black-and-white magic of Herman Leonard—who in the 1940s revolutionized jazz iconography by immortalizing legends like Dexter Gordon and Lester Young—dialogues with the contemporary perspective of Pino Ninfa, who for decades has pursued a personal artistic quest tied to the world of music and the arts at large. This deep connection with the festival comes alive even further through the display of two photographs captured during past JAZZMI editions and the cover of Ninfa’s new book with Paolo Fresu.
