FRANCESCO CAVESTRI TRIO – H 19:30
Alongside Riccardo Oliva and Joe Allotta, Francesco Cavestri will present his debut album “Early 17.”
The repertoire of the concert will move on different musical atmospheres: from the presentation of some original songs by Francesco Cavestri to others belonging to the hip-hop, new-soul and jazz scene of the last years, to reinterpretations and tributes to giants such as John Coltrane or Robert Glasper, in a continuous search for innovation and avant-garde sound, since, as Francesco says “jazz is a genre that goes beyond genres, and its essence is to push the boundaries.”
DON KARATE – H 21:00
Don Karate is a strange project, a kind of (in)expected detour. Because Don Karate is the solo-ever-less-solo project of Stefano Tamborrino, a Florentine, one of the most sought-after and appreciated jazz drummers around, not only in Italy.
And together with Tamborrino two huge personalities of the European jazz scene (and already historical collaborators, at least in live performances, of the Don Karate project): Pasquale Mirra on vibraphone and Francesco Ponticelli on bass (who also co-produced this work).
Three masters of improvisation who synthesize their union not in a contest of virtuosity for its own sake but in an experience that is rhythmic, harmonic and emotional together. The result is a record that sounds like a kaleidoscope, a complex sonic universe that expands song by song, oscillating between Makaya McCraven sessions and Tortoise records.
SUN RA ARKESTRA – H 22:30
Sun Ra was one of the most important and controversial figures in modern jazz. A self-proclaimed extraterrestrial from Saturn, Sun Ra was a poet, a philosopher, but above all the founder of the Sun Ra Arkestra in the 1950s, an “intergalactic orchestra” of more than thirty musicians.
After the death of its legendary founder, the Arkestra passed to the artistic direction of Marshall Belford Allen in 1995. Under his leadership, the Arkestra continued to put on eclectic performances that offered a powerful mix of music, poetry, theater and dance. Allen continues to carry on the Arkestra not as a repertory band or a ghost band, but as a band of the spirit, maintaining discipline focused on the study, research and further development of the precepts of Sun Ra
POPULOUS DJ SET – H 00:00
Populous, aka Andrea Mangia, is a DJ and producer from Lecce, Italy.
His debut album was released in 2003 and was titled “Quipo,” followed by 2005’s “Queue for Love,” two albums influenced equally by instrumental hip hop and indietronica. A global approach to the creative process has recently led him to focus on new Latin American rhythms, filtering them through a European lens. With “Night safari” (2013) and “Azulejos” (2016), he earned a place on the international electronic music map. 2019 is the year of her most mature album, “W,” an ode to femininity in all its facets. “W” (which stands for “women”) is an invitation to accept one’s feminine side and a tribute to all female artists who have had to struggle to make their art visible. Themes dear to the lgbtq+ community, such as diversity and inclusion, become central parts of its dialectic.
